Top 5 Supplements

Should I do protein shakes? What about fish oil? I heard acai is a superfood ...and green tea extract helps with weight loss.

Like most people, you probably want to be a little leaner, have more energy, and feel healthier.  Supplements are sold as the easy solution.

The problem is that the world of supplements is like the wild west - unregulated and not tested by the FDA. A supplement may be life-changing for one person and dangerous for another.  While it’s foolish to make a blanket recommendation for everyone, there are a few that could be helpful to you.

Remember, a supplement should SUPPLEMENT your diet, not replace it.  If you have to choose between spending time and money on supplements vs real food, choose the real food! But with a busy American lifestyle, it can be difficult even for health nuts to get all the nutrients their body needs.

Here are the 5 supplements that I take and I believe are worth considering:

#1 Fish Oil

Minimum recommendation for EPA and DHA (healthy fats only found in fish oil) is 900mg per day.  The average North American gets only 300mg per day.

#2 Greens Supplements

Recommended fruit and vegetable intake is 3-5 servings per day.  Only 3% of men and 7% of women meet these minimums.  Greens can’t replace veggies, but they can help to make up for missing micronutrients and they can be a helpful tool when on the road or in a hurry.

#3 Protein Powder

It’s also difficult for exercising individuals to get the recommended amount of protein (1g of protein/pound of body weight per day).  Protein supplements can help.  The recommended range for a protein supplement is 40-80g/day.

#4 Multivitamin

Studies show that the modern diet generally leads to deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals.  A multivitamin may help address those deficiencies.

#5 Probiotics

Gut health affects the health of your entire body.  Getting probiotics from fermented foods is ideal, but a probiotic supplement can be helpful for the kimchi haters.
